U.S. GAO CONFIRMS TEMPERATURE RECORD FLAWED

Posted: 24th October 2011

Meteorologist Anthony Watts has long campaigned for an examination of the integrity of the U.S. land-based temperature record used as part of the global dataset for changes in global temperature.

Watts belief that many of the measuring stations have been comprimised through nearby development and changes led him to investigate and report on his findings.

The U.S. General Accounting Office has vindicated his report findings that the data is flawed.

His report is available in pdf at the end of this post as is the GAO report.

What sort of culture exists in govenment climate science institutions whereby volunteers are left to expose a widely discussed problem with climate data?

SHOULD THE TAXPAYER FUND THE GOVT's "SAY YES" MEN?

Posted: 20th October 2011

The recent taxpayer funded advertising campaign spruiking the carbon tax legislation ran over budget and cost almost $24 million to sell a message to voters, who according to the latest Nielsen poll, almost 60% of whom are opposed to the legislation.

One could argue the government of the day has a right to provide 'information' to voters about important legislation.  It is however harder to accept that taxpayers should be funding sycophant advocacy groups selling a political message the majority of voters are opposed to.

It was revealed in senate estimates hearings that $3 million of taxpayer funds were distributed to green groups who "have backed Labor's package to fight off the Opposition's campaign against the policy."

It is certainly a very dubious method of selling poor public policy.

Martin Feil, an economist writing at the ABC's website The Drum details the failings of the policy message sold to the Australian public.

"A complex, multi-faceted issue such as climate change is a perfect opportunity for obfuscation and diversion. The opportunity is even more compelling when the public purse is available to pay for the messages".

CARBON TAX: BILLIONS WILL BE WASTED

Posted: 17th October 2011

SO it's done. But it's hardly a shining achievement. Even the government's hope is that by the next election most voters will have forgotten it. And who knows, like an unpleasant visit to the dentist, the climate change legislation may fade with time. But it will still be the most expensive dentist's visit in our history says Henry Ergas in The Australian.
